A downloadable game for Windows

This is my end of year project for my dissertation report 'Converting a university module into a videogame (Gamification)'.

The duration of the project was during the second semester, around 10-11 weeks in total. The project consisted of this 'Creative Piece', a showcase, and the dissertation research report, all done simultanously.

I chose 'Foundation Mathematics' as I remembered when I was in the class, on several occassions several students would ask "Why are we learning maths? We're programmers!" and it would make me laugh.

My initial thoughts for this project were:

  •  What if there's a ghost that loves maths haunting John Dalton? (the maths building)
  • What if the ghost hears the students say this? Would it make the ghost angry?
  • Could this be a horror game?

And so, I took photos of the maths section in the John Dalton building in preparation to make a replica of said building. The start (with tutorial) is a semi-accurate replica of John Dalton at Manchester Metropolitan University, minus the different flooring, and the tutor offices (I did not replicate each tutors office as I thought it'd be unethical to force them to let me photograph their personal spaces and publically advertise it in a videogame).

So you start in the "Good" version of MMU John Dalton, and once you trigger the ghost at the end of the tutorial, you are thrown in to the "Evil" version of the MMU John Dalton building. Forced to learn mathematics until you escape.

The game itself includes 'Foundation Mathematics' first three chapters of the textbook, and questions from the textbook on said subject matter.

To make it easier for the examiners, the final exam has the correct answer with fake ("A", "B", "C", "D") answers as placeholders.

It is fully voice acted and subtitled for accessibility purposes.

I am posting this to my Itch IO account as a portfolio piece. I hope potential employeers have fun looking into it, as it showcases an idea from start to finish over a duration of several weeks, and if any future employer wishes to see the dissertation report that this creative piece was made for, I'd be happy to share it with them.
